Don’t Miss the Boat! Head’s up for the first ever “Ocean Connections” Conference to be held in the Strait-Area on Wednesday April 5th, 2006 at the NSCC-Strait Campus, Nautical Institute from 8:00am-5:00pm. This conference will allow attendees to discover the leading trends in Ocean industry sectors, new potential partnerships, groundbreaking technology, regional challenges and opportunities. The conference will consist of presentations made by professionals from a wide range of Ocean Sectors including Education/Technology/Innovation, Ocean Infrastructure, Ocean Food, and Ocean Energy, etc. The keynote luncheon speaker for the conference will be Linden MacIntyre, award winning broadcast journalist and co-host of CBC's The Fifth Estate. Having been raised in Port Hastings, Cape Breton Linden MacIntyre will present an intertwining of global and local perspective on the coastal and ocean opportunities and challenges. Blaine Gillis, Chief Executive Officer of the Strait-Highlands Regional Development Agency and member of the conference steering committee, indicates, “The conference will be interesting to individuals associated with the Ocean Industry and for those who have a general interest in understanding the economic importance and impact of ocean industries to the North Eastern Region of Nova Scotia.” The conference is meant to provide an opportunity to better understand the significant economic contribution and importance of the Ocean Industry sectors to our region in North East Nova Scotia. The conference will also provide opportunity to find out what’s new and happening in Ocean Industry related sectors (education, technology, innovation, infrastructure, harvesting, processing & energy) and hear first hand from Ocean Industry leaders on opportunities, challenges and trends. Throughout the duration of the conference there will be time allotted to network and exchange information, contacts, thoughts and ideas and to navigate future growth opportunities (partnerships, occupations, business). Ginny Boudreau, Manager & Research Coordinator of the Guysborough County Inshore Fishermen Association and Conference steering committee representative, remarked, “The conference promises to be interesting and informative with a panelist line-up that has appeal to fishermen, aquaculturists, recreational boaters, boat builders, suppliers and community leaders.” In addition to a series of panel presentations, an open mike session will give participants the opportunity to ask questions and provide comments. Ocean Industry trade booths and representatives will be onsite distributing information and discussing opportunities. A minimal registration fee of $20 will be charged and includes conference, materials, and a hot lunch. Registration begins at 8:00 am and the conference runs from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
