PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND AND THE NORTHUMBERLAND STRAIT

(Click to enlarge) Northumberland StraitThe Northumberland Strait is bordered on the West by New Brunswick, on the East by Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Island, but the jewel of the Strait is Prince Edward Island. Recently connected to the mainland with the Confederation Bridge, the island remains a beautiful place to visit, fringed with beaches ranging from white sanded duned beaches to brilliant red sand bordered by clay cliffs and Headlands.

There are golf courses, theme and adventure parks, the 'seat' of Canadian Confederation and of course the mystique that surrounds the fictional character, Anne of Green Gables, created by Prince Edward Island author Lucy Maud Montgomery.

The Northumberland Strait is home to many fishing boats although the designs here differ from the Nova Scotia inspired Cape Islander. Here the elegant Northumberland fishing boat is built by boat shops on the Strait in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick. The Northumberland Strait is sandy, warm and much shallower than the Atlantic Ocean, so these boats are designed for the sea conditions found here.

Designated the birth place of 'New Scotland', Pictou has dockage and full marine services for visiting and resident boats at Pictou Marina.

A full-scale replica of the ship 'Hector' which carried the Scots to their new home is on display at the Hector Heritage Quay. Close to Pictou is the harbour of Caribou where the ferry to Prince Edward Island runs to Woods Island.

On the Prince Edward Island side of the strait, the capital of Charlottetown is a charming vibrant town located in Hillsborough inlet. Quartermaster Marine maintains a full service Marina on the Charlottetown waterfront in Peake's Quay.

Cape Tormentine in New Brunswick is where the Confederation Bridge runs across the strait to Borden in Prince Edward Island.

Points of Interest are Shediac Bay, with several Marinas for boats. Cocagne, Bouctouche and Richibucto, have facilities for boaters and all are on the mouths of rivers feed into the Strait.

On the shores of Prince Edward Island the island's second largest town, Summerside, has facilities for boats and further west, the village of West Point has a small harbour.
